I think the guy is depressed. It happens to a lot of people who don’t have jobs, especially at his age. He might even be a more generous person (or maybe not) but conserving money and having the job search constantly weighing on you can take over your life, and your head.
I watched this kind of transformation happen to a friend of mine — he got to where he didn’t want to leave the house, he wanted company but didn’t feel like he deserved to have anyone around, and whatever initiative and generosity he normally had just went away (it’s back now that he’s been working for a while.)
Whether you stay with him or sleep with him is up to you. I’m not sure what you like about him, but if there are some qualities you do like, then you might try to figure out whether this is something you want to ride out. Getting a job could change him considerably, and sticking by him could also earn his gratitude, but if he’s mired so deep that finding something isn’t imminent, you may not want to stick around forever either, especially if he’s displaying qualities that you don’t like or want to be around.
