I think that guys expect the relationship to exist in more of a silo and anticipate that they can get intellectual stimulation from other sources if necessary.
This is my view/position, although I’m sure this preference is not very homogenous. Obviously, BV is a good example of strongly preferring high intelligence.
For the benefit of clarity and those who lack reading comprehension (and perhaps are not as intelligent as they think), a lack of a strong preference for high intelligence is not synonymous with a preference for stupid. If I had to guess, my wife’s IQ is probably around 110-115, which is about a 20 point gap. I can’t play competitive chess with her, but that is OK. That said, her creativity and aesthetic sense exceeds mine greatly so we are complementary.

Emily, I think that, perhaps sadly, it probably has to do with having some leverage in the mating mkt: if you are a young guy with a relatively modest income, a steep differential between your $ and that of an attractive female might allow you to be more impressive from a value-prop perspective than you would be if you faced a female counterpart who was an equal earner.
